Easy Style Guide

I know how hard it can be and stressful to find outfits for you and your family for a photo session. I hope some of the tips below will prepare you and your family for what to wear!

My biggest tip that I like to give when people ask me about what to wear is, ultimately HAPPINESS trumps outfits. I would rather have smiles and not so coordinating outfits then coordination and no smiles! Comfort is key especially for young kiddos. Let your kids be a part of picking out outfits.

I always start with color scheme. Your color scheme can be a neutral, you can never go wrong with a great neutral.

Choose ONE outfit and then coordinate around that!

Try these tips when picking something for yourself (for women):

  • Wear a dress. Trust me on this one. You’ll feel prettier, and it’s more flattering than anything else you can wear.
  • Pick a dress that’s figure flattering. I recommend any kind that has a fitted waist. Skip the shift dresses and swing dresses because one gust of wind and you suddenly look twice as wide as you actually are.
  • If you’re not a big fan of dresses, choose a skirt and top combination. But again, choose one that’s an A-Line style (fitted in the waist and flows out over your hips). I promise it’ll be 1000x more flattering than anything else you could pick.
  • If you are like me and dresses and skirts are tougher, wear something more dressy than your everyday outfit. T-shirt material doesn't hang as well as chiffon, rayon, linen, double knit, or silk, and could look cheap and unflattering from some angles.
  • Choose the color you want to wear and build from there. We all know it's hardest to get us dressed, so start with yourself instead of fitting yourself in at the end.

Try these tips when picking out an outfit for yourself ( for men)

  • Great comfortable slacks/ pants are the perfect way to start. Especially with my photos shoots, we do alot of standing and sitting and comfortable pants will be great for moving around.
  • Pick a shirt that coordinates with the color scheme picked.
  • I recommend a plain shirt especially if there are others in the shoot wearing patterns. This will allow you to flow with all the other outfits.

Try these tips when picking an outfit for younger ones:

  • Comfort is key! I can't stress this enough. I know the desire for the perfect family photo lingers in the back of all of our minds. I recommend picking out a few outfits that coordinate and giving your younger ones options, letting them choose will give them a sense of control!
  • I always love little ones in patterns!! They accent a photo shoot so well. This also gives them a little bit of creativity and usually gives them something to show off throughout the shoot.
  • For the colder months, layers are great! a great solid long sleeve shirt goes great under a sweater or jacket. Neutral colored pants or leggings will go great with any color scheme you pick.
  • Shoes are another sticking point for a lot of kiddos. During most of my photo shoots if you don't want the shoes showing we can hide them ( not always but most of the time ). For my kiddos, shoes are a make or break, they want to wear what they want to wear, this harkens back to COMFORT and SMILES!!

Solids vs. Patterns

You may feel more comfortable having everyone in solid color fabrics, but you can also feel free to mix in a couple different patterns and textures to add some more dimension and character! The key here is, less is more. If one child is wearing stripes, don’t put the whole family in stripes and polka dots and plaid. That’s just too busy and too much.

Blending different tones, textures and patterns can add to your overall effect of your photos. Pairing a nice cream dress or shirt with a green shirt or patterned shirt on one of the kiddos or a spouse is such a great way to add pops of color! Simple, clean, and comfortable is best here!
